WAWEL - ROYAL CASTLE

Wherever you come from, this is something you can’t miss – the Wawel Hill with the Royal Castle and Cathedral.

The castle served as the residence of the Polish rulers for over five centuries and witnessed the greatest moments in the Polish history.

No wonder that it’s a place where every stone has its own history and where the spirit of the past is so much alive.

When you visit the castle, who knows, you might as well see the ghosts of the Polish kings and queens walking past you in the long hallways and high rooms.

It’s a place where the history mingles with the present in an unusual way and where the beautiful historic architecture and the surrounding landscape create a harmonious unity.

For many Poles, this hill, with the Royal Castle and Cathedral, is a symbol of Polishness and of the strength of the old Polish empire.

Wawel is not only one of the most beautiful Renaissance castles in Europe but also a very interesting museum.

The castle houses a huge museum which is so rich in exhibits that it had to be divided into sections to make the life of the visitors easier.

You can choose exhibitions which you would like to see and it’s easier to concentrate on one theme at a time.

The choice is as follows: the State Rooms, the Royal Private Apartments, the Treasury and Armoury, the Oriental Art, the Lost Wawel, the Cathedral and the Dragon’s Den.

In the bell-tower of the Cathedral you can see and touch one of the biggest bells in Europe.

Yes, touch. As the tradition has it, it brings good luck to touch the heart of the bell.
The bell bears a name of one of the kinds, Sigmund, and weighs 11 tonnes.
Unfortunately, it’s rare to hear its sonorous sound – it tolls a few times a year only, on very important religious or national holidays.

At the feet of the hill there are a few caves, as the legend has it, the dens of a fierce dragon.
The dragon was slain ages ago but the legend is still alive, especially in the vivid imagination of younger Cracovians.
