The Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum consists of two parts open for visiting. At the beginning you will enter Auschwitz I concentration camp. The camp started to function in 1940. Auschwitz I then was the only territory of it. Until the end of the second world war, the camp was constantly developing and growing. Eventually, it had become the biggest Nazi extermination camp in the world and the most recognisable symbol of the Holocaust.
The tour later leads to Auschwitz II – Birkenau, the next part of the camp situated 3 km away from Auschwitz I. This part of the camp is situated at the nearby village Brzezinka and was built as a concentration camp to contain the growing flocks of the prisoners brought over to the area. Most of the buildings here were brick or wooden sleeping barracks. They were overcrowded and not sufficiently heated. The living conditions of the prisoners were extremely harsh.
The whole ensemble after 1941 functioned as a place of mass extermination, with the overall number of victims exceeding 1,1 million people. Mass transports of people were brought here just to be sent to the gas chambers.
After the visiting Auschwitz Museum, the driver will take you to Wieliczka. The Salt Mine near this city is one of the oldest mines in the world and the oldest one on the territory of Poland. The primitive salt extraction here started around 3,000 BC. The mine was open in the 13th century by the contemporary Duke of Krakow, Przemysl II. The city and the salt mines procreated in the 14th century during the rules of Casimir the Great. The salt mines had the crucial role in the economy and export of Poland. Already in the 14th century, 30% of the gold of the crown was from the salt mining.
Nowadays the complex is enormous. The mine is one of the biggest in the world. The total length of the galleries is over 250 km. The visitors see only a small part of the whole mines and passages, but the experience is still stunning. During the tour, you will walk through 3,5 km of the labyrinths and have 800 steps to deal with.
There are over 20 chambers and chapels on your way. You will have the opportunity to visit the breathtaking st. Kinga’s chapel, carved inside a huge block of salt. It is one of the popular places to hold cultural events, concerts, weddings or Holy Masses. Also, you will visit other underground chapels and churches, completely made of salt. In the chambers, the exhibition is placed. There are numerous reliefs and salt-made sculptures. Some of them are salt-made copies of the famous masterpieces.
