Zakopane and Tatra Mountains trips - General Information
Zakopane is a popular destination during both summer and winter seasons, serving as a hub for those who wish to go to explore the Polish mountains or do some skiing or snowboarding. But apart from being just the starting point for the activities, Zakopane can offer you several options to make a day of it.
During Zakopane and Tatra Mountains tour, pay close attention to the architecture. Zakopane is one of the best expositions of the Podhale Highlander architecture style as well as a cradle of the Zakopane style. Sometimes those two styles are confused. Podhale highlander style is prevalent and, one can say "typical" for the mountainous regions. You can see the examples of this style not only in Zakopane but also in other villages or towns. The trademarks of this style are pointed roofs. And Zakopane style is a name for the architecture created by Witkiewicz in the end of 19th century (that's why this style is sometimes called Witkiewicz Style). The style did not get round. Occurrences of its architecture can be found only in Zakopane. It's worth to take a walk down the Koscieliska street to Villa Koliba, where the Museum of Zakopane Style, which is one of the main attractions in Zakopane, is placed. Villa Ornak is another illustration of Zakopane Style. Nowadays it performs the functions of both being a museum and a hotel, where it is possible to stay a night in the room furnished with the furniture which is over 100 years old.
Other from just architecture, Zakopane is full of the folk highlander culture which creates the unique spirit there. There are numerous atmospheric cafes and restaurants where you can eat local food. Also, the sights are breathtaking. The climate in summer there has a positive impact on the diseases of the respiratory tract.
Other highlights of Zakopane are its thermal waters. In the area of Zakopane and nearby towns, there is the highest number of hot springs in Poland. Thermal waters are used in the local swimming pools and waterparks. These waters are high in minerals and in elements that have a soothing impact on the skin and are good for health and relaxation. The participants of Zakopane and Tatra mountains trips can visit one of the waterparks and unwind while lying in the warm water.
Tatra mountains and massifs surround Zakopane. One of the most famous peaks is Gubałówka, which is an 1129 m above the sea level high. You can get there by feet from Krupówki – the main street in Zakopane. It is popular because of a nice panoramic view of the Tatra Mountains. From the peak, you can also admire Zakopane town spread in the valley. Though the trail up is not long – it takes about an hour – it can be quite challenging and tiring. There is also an option to get here by a cable car. From Gubałówka you can take a walk to the nearby placed summits, as Butowy Wierch (red trail, around 15 minutes). Also, you can Witów village (2 hours), which is one of the best-preserved villages in the south of Poland. If you want to have a look at Podhale highlander architecture, you should visit it.
Another highly recognisable sight is Giewont. It is a mountain massif of the length 2,7 km and height 1894 m above the sea level. Giewont is the most easily spotted massif visible from Zakopane, the shape of it resembles a man lying on his back. That's why this mountain range sometimes is called "The Sleeping Knight". Local people can tell you the legend about the knight who was cursed but is supposed to wake up to protect Poland if the country is in danger.
